Veronica and Andrew chose St. Francis Barracks Officer’s Club for their wedding and it was beautiful even with the rain 🙂 The same morning they decided to add a tent in the courtyard because the forecast was telling us that it would rain during the ceremony. It rained but it didn’t matter. Those two are so in love that their love shines through the clouds.

We decided that a little bit of rain wouldn’t stop us to have beautiful pictures and we wen’t through St. Augustine for the bride & groom pictures. It was lot of fun and the rain eventually stopped!

The Bridge of Lions was our first stop 🙂

After spending few days in Fukuoka we took the bullet train to Kyoto Japan. We were extremely lucky to visit Kyoto with our friends Jennifer and Shinji. Because Shinji is Japanese it was much easier to understand the menu and found our way through the city 🙂 Look HERE at my cell phone pictures to see the amazing room we had in Kyoto Japan. It was a room with tatamis on the floor. The room doesn’t have a bed. They come during the dinner time to get your room ready and put a tin mattress on the floor. The mattress on top of the tatamis is the most comfortable bed ever!

As soon as we arrived we started to walk through the city. It’s unbelievable; there are temples and beautiful sculptures everywhere!

kyoto japanI felt in love with the Golden temple! It’s so beautiful and I could only imagine with fall color or with snow in winter! I have to come back to see it.professional photographer jacksonville floridaA bamboo for pipe is a perfect fountainkyotoWe found those two in front of a temple. They were deists for couple. You had to rub them with your right hand or both hand to have your wish come true.  kyoto templesJapanA tatamis room with drawing on the wall. The drawings represent a dragon (we can’t see it in the picture). In Japan, you count the size of the room by the number of tatamis that are in. It’s not a 245sqf but a 9 tatamis room. Japanese housesJapanese landscapebudha kyotoJapanese sandKyoto Japan

The second part of basic of digital photography focus on shutter speed and aperture. This two are the main components of the exposure. ISO is the third one.

Let’s start with shutter speed. As I said in the previous blog (see here) shutter speed is the speed as the lens opens and closes. The fastest, the less light enters; the slowest, more light enters. A good rule of thumb is to never use a speed slower than 1/80 (only the second number is written in the small screen of your camera) per second if your camera is not in a tripod. Slower than that the picture would be blurry just because you can’t stay still enough. You can be as fast as you want.

Consider what you are taking pictures of. If you are taking pictures at a soccer game, you will need a fast shutter speed so the players will be sharp on the pictures. If you are taking pictures of a landscape you can use a slower shutter speed as nothing is moving.

Aperture is how big the lens opens. The number that represent aperture are called f-stop. Full f-stop are f/1.4 | f/2 | f/2.8 | f/4 | f/5.6 | f/8 | f/11| f/16| f/22. Aperture is one component of the exposure but also creates the depth of field of your picture. f/1.4 is the widest opening, you use it when it’s dark and/or when you want to create  a small depth of field. F/22 is the smallest opening and create a large depth of field, almost everything is sharp in the picture.

The first picture shows a small depth of field. You can see how the plant is sharp but everything in the background is blurry. This effect is used a lot in photography to show emphasizes on the sharpest part.

My setting were aperture f/2.0, shutter speed 1/400, ISO 200

Shutter speed and apertureIn this picture the depth of field is larger. Because I modified the aperture I had to compensate with the shutter speed in order to keep my exposure correct. My settings were Aperture f/6.3, Shutter speed 1/80, ISO 200.Shutter speed and aperture 2When you have a wide aperture it is very important to decide where you want to put your focal point. By rule of thumb, you always focus in the eye that is the closest to the lens.

As usual it’s my way to teach basic of digital photography. I don’t pretend to have is all right and I just want to help people who just bought a digital camera and don’t know how to start.

I have been asked to teach a basic of digital photography  to a small group of people this Saturday and I thought that other people would be interested to. I am not saying that I have it right and that is the only way to teach but it is what I think is the most important to start. Please, understand that it is a really beginner class and I will add later more advance levels. I am a Nikon user so I will reference to what I know. The terms are the same but the function may be at different places.

Most of the digital cameras are very good if you use them in exposure automatic mode. For Nikon this mode is P. When you put the camera in P it will decide what is the best exposure for the picture. You will still be able to modify the setting but the camera will keep the right exposure for you.

Now let’s start to learn how to use your camera in M mode. M stands for Manual. First you need to learn how to expose the picture. A well exposed picture has some black and some white and all middle range tons. Obviously not all pictures will have all tons it depends on the subject.

The exposure depends on three factors, shutter speed, aperture and ISO. When you look through your view finder you will see at the bottom a line written  -2..-1..0..1..2..  Sometimes you just have the line with dots (no numbers). For a perfect exposure you need to have the line exactly on the 0.

Shutter speed is the speed that the camera takes to open and close the opening of the lens. When it’s bright it’s fast, when it’s dark it’s slow. You can’t go under 1/80 of a second if you don’t use a tripod or your picture will be blurry because you are shaking. You can go as fast as you want.

Aperture is the size of the opening of the lens. When it’s bright the opening is small (see figure 2) when it’s dark the opening is big (see figure 1).

ISO is the sensors sensibility to the light.

To start, try to keep your ISO at 200 outside and 400-500 inside. Then modify your settings until the line is at 0. Take the picture. You should have a perfect exposure. It’s important to understand that you need to modify those numbers each time you take a picture 🙂

I will get in more details in my next post. This one is the basic of digital photography 1.

When Kadija called me to schedule Alpha 2nd birthday pictures I couldn’t believe it. It seems that it was last week that I did his newborn pictures and yesterday the smash the cake for his one year! I really love following my young client. It’s so much fun to see how they grow up and how they develop their own personality. Alpha for his 1st year picture was running around and creating a huge mess in the studio but this year for his 2nd birthday pictures he was a handsome calm young boy. I can’t believe how he grows up in one year! Kadija was as usual beautiful in every outfits she tries.

I absolutely love this first picture. For me it shows what a mother is. She is here to help, guide and love but also to leave him try by himself and learn by experience.
