Kayla June (link to her website: HERE) of Shutter Souls accepted to be a guest on this blog and she describes below a little bit more about their collective. Kayla is one of the first person I met in Jacksonville as she was a teacher at the English Language Program (ELP) at UNF that I followed when I arrived in Jacksonville in 2006. I am very thankful for her help and friendship. Learning a second language is not an easy task and I consider her,  the other teachers and my fellow students as part of my Jacksonville’s family 🙂

From Kayla June:

I think we’ve all had this experience:  you start talking passionately about the thing you’re currently obsessed with to your spouse/partner/best friend/mom and realize almost immediately that this person just doesn’t get it.  I think a lot of photographers feel this way.  Those around us don’t understand why we dream at night of a new lens, why we’re photographing words on a page (again!), or how some evenings the light is so magical that we just have to shoot.  And it’s exactly how I felt until I met the women who form Shutter Souls.

We are a collective of female photographers in the Greater Jacksonville area who love all things photography.  We all have very different styles and subject matter that we like to shoot, but we have one thing in common—we get it!  Whether it’s macro images of our kids’ crayons or landscape shots of our travels, we are constantly shooting, learning and comparing notes along the way.  The talent in our group is unbelievable.  Come check out some of our recent work at the April Art Walk.  And if photography is your passion, too, we’d love to chat! Artists showing their works are: Kayla June Photography, MColichio Photography, Meghan Nesom Photography, Lisa Snead and Leslie Kleyla

A lot of people ask me how I use light on my picture. So I thought that I would share my afternoon lighting training with my external flash. I decided I wanted to practice rim light. Rime light is when you frame the subject with light from behind it. It creates a beautiful frame of light around the subject. It’s a lighting that is used a lot for the first dance at wedding.

I didn’t have a model so I used my two dogs Comet and Zizou. On top of being a lighting training it’s also an obedience class for them as they have to stay still 🙂 (not always easy… lol!)

I recently started to use the wireless flash transceiver V5 from cactus. I plugged one on top of my camera as transmitter and one with the flash on it as receiver. I set up my flash to 1/8 and put it on the floor 4 feet behind my dogs. I realized that 1/8 was to strong and decrease to 1/16.

Dog portraitMy setting for this one of Comet are: F 4.0, 1/60sec,  190mm with the 70-200mm, ISO 1000.

dog portraitThe setting for this one of Zizou are similar: F 4.0, 1/60sec, 190mm, ISO 1000

I decided to use black and white for the image because the light was showing through their ears and it was looking pink. Black and white is also so elegant and their weimaraner’s look works perfect with it.

I used Pure actions (link HERE) Cayden Lane Presets for Lightroom the basic black and white and I finished with the upcoming Pure matt set. Seriously their actions for Lightroom and Photoshop are amazing and they make my workflow so much faster!

I hope that help! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any question. You can write them in the comment area and I will do my best to answer 🙂

XOXO

Josmary and Eric Jacksonville beach wedding was perfect. The day before it was stormy and the next day raining all day. We couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect weather than what we had. Jacksonville beach is a beautiful location for a beach wedding!

When I met Josmary she told me that her wedding would be different, lay-back and fun and she asked me if I could go with the flow. I was more than happy to do so. We had tons of fun and the pictures are gorgeous! Look at those pictures when Django their bulldog!

I was so happy to take Nabad, Lauriane, and Sitou siblings pictures. We had so much fun in the studio!  They have been my dear friends since I arrived in Jacksonville. We did those pictures because Nabad decided to leave us to live in Dallas… but I know that she stays close to us in her heart and thought and she will be back to visit!

The craziest adventure I have done with them was when Sitou was running to be the Student Body President of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. We all had weeks of craziness running around, making flyers, signs, banners! At the same time, we had lots of fun and I got to know them better. They are the nicest family I know here in Jacksonville and I consider them part of my family.

Leave them a message at the bottom of the post!

Bethany and Patrick had a fun idea for their engagement photos in Jacksonville. They decided that we would take the car and drive around stopping at different locations and have fun. And we had lots of fun!
It was a Sunday afternoon and the weather was gorgeous. Not too hot or cold. Parks are crowded with families enjoying the nice weather so we started at the Oak tree. I like to go to the Oak tree. It’s majestic and remind you of the history of the city. The tree is more than two centuries old! I always wonder how many couple this tree has seen! You can see more pictures of the Oak tree HERE in another post.Elegant engagement photos in jacksonville near the Oak Tree ParkThe light was just gorgeous for those portraitsengagement-jacksonvilleWe decided to stop by the Memorial Park for more engagement photos in Jacksonville as the sun was getting lower.Fun engagement photos by the Oak Tree Park in JacksonvilleBethany really wanted some black and white portrait in the studio so we decided to go back.
