Planes, trains, and motorcycles..For Dawn and Marc’s engagement session they planned an amazing travel themed St Augustine engagement session. We met them at the St. Augustine airport where Marc got us access to the tarmac around the small planes. The people working at the airport were great, they let us wonder around from plane to plane trying to find the ones that would work best for the photographs. Marc and Dawn put so much effort into planning their session and it shows in the pictures. They went around to local thrift shops looking for props and found old suitcases, travel books and maps for the session.

After shooting around the small planes we then found a little lake with a great oak tree for shade. Marc is a huge Marlon Brando fan and wanted to create some picture based off Brando’s classic film The Wild One. Marc’s Ducati is a little newer than Marlon’s Triumph in the movie but Marc demeanor and attitude was pure Brando. Dawn and Marc planned everything and it was amazing, after shooting with the motorcycle we then met with the owner of St. Augustine Bi-Plane Tours and he escorted us to his hanger to use his plane as part of the travel themed session. The plane was a beautiful piece of machinery from a classic period of aviation and made a perfect backdrop and prop for their photos.

We finished of the shoot with a few quick shots inside the airport terminal, and on the train tracks across the street from the airport. We were starting to run out of sunlight so had only a few minutes to composes the picture they wanted of them laying together on top of the maps planning their lifetimes of adventures. Lucky the airport is not the busiest since the best spot for the photograph happened to be in an upstairs hallway leading to the airport bar. With the map spread out and them laying down we ending up blocking the way in and out but we did quick and didn’t get in anyone’s way. As the sun was falling behind the trees we walked across US 1 to get a few shots of them on the train tracks to complete their travel themed engagement session. It was a fun session; it’s great when a couple has an idea and puts so much work into making it perfect.

Most people don’t know that my assistant Dan, and me have both graduated from the University of North Florida with Bachelors of Fine Arts Photography. Although most our time at school was spent in darkrooms and the photo program we did venture out into the light to be active participates in the university art scene. We made many friends and worked with many local artists during our time in the art program, now that we have the studio it is always nice to invite them to get their work professionally documented.

One Local artist we recently had the pleasure of working with was the talented sculptor Courtney McCracken. She came to us looking to have her latest series of work, Luster, documented before leaving to Athens Georgia to pursue her master’s degree in Sculpture. The best way to describe her work would be to use her on words, this is what she wrote on her website about her Luster Series.

“The current body of work, Luster appeals to the materiality of the home as an icon of possession and order. The shimmering box-like home is a glorified container that produces conversation with history-embedded materials. These works of acrylic and fiber dance between decoration and function and breathe life into abstract narratives. Each hand-embroidered text questions language and its correlation with space and perspective. There is a laborious technical skill that evokes an immediate response of aesthetic fulfillment and it is the origin of this satisfaction I am bringing into question.”

We think she is a dedicated talented sculptor that is going places and is a name to remember. Just think of how many hours she puts into these pieces, all those knots are tied by hand!!

One of our most recent engagement sessions at Severine Photography was for the lovely couple Renae and David. Their beautiful Jacksonville Beach engagement pictures were taken on a Saturday night last month. After having to postpone a few times due to the weather we finally got a day where the weather was nice cooperated with us. It was just exactly what we need it; not too windy, not storming and a perfect sunset. Renae and David are going to be married at Casa Marina later this year so what better backdrop for the pictures than the beach and boardwalk right by their wedding venue.

We started out the shoot by exploring the streets of Jacksonville Beach, the colorful walls of the clubs and restaurants perfectly complemented Renae’s dress to create some stunning  portraits. As the sun was setting and the sky turned to a beautiful golden glow we moved to the beach to take advantage of the golden hour of light and took some gorgeous picture by the dunes and under the pier.

Renae and David were great to work with and up to any ideas we had. They even were willing to stay after the sunset and have some fun experimenting with light writing. We first wanted to try a sparkler shot but after about 20 minuets of trying to hide from the wind to get the sparkler to light and a blister on Dan’s thumb from the lighter, we had to think of a new idea. To write with light all you need is a light source facing the camera and a long exposure so we switched to the trusty flash light app on a smart phone and we were finally able to have some fun and take some amazing nighttime photos.

I decided to write a post about how to synchronize your capture time in Lightroom after spending hours editing a wedding with three different cameras and three different times… a nightmare…

There is an easy fix in Lightroom, so even if you and your second shooter forget to synchronize your cameras, it will not be a problem.

First import your pictures in Lightroom then click on “Metadata” from the Library Filter bar. You will see all your cameras listed.

Click on one of the camera (Nikon D3 in my example) and look at the pictures. You need to choose one that you are sure to find in all your cameras (the first kiss of the husband and wife is usually the best).

Click on the picture you choose once then click on “metadata” “Edit Capture Time”

Look at take note at what time the picture was taken (6:45:43PM in my example). We will then synchronize your other cameras to this time. Click “cancel”.

Click “Metadata” then on the camera you want to change the capture time. Select all the pictures (click on the first one then shift on PC and click on the last one).

Click once on the picture you previously selected that exists on all cameras (first kiss works well). It’s important to click only once or you loose the selection of all pictures.

Click again on “metadata” then modify the time to the main camera you previously noted on a paper then click “change all”. It may ask your if you want to synchronize all selected pictures, answer yes.

It’s done! If you click on “all cameras” you will see that all the fist kiss are now synchronize!

Being a engagement and wedding photographer there are many times when a bride and groom to be come to us with ideas for their photo shoots. Most ideas couples bring to us are great but few of them have been as fun to capture as Sara and Brandon’s engagement session. Sara and Brandon wanted something colorful and fun so they drew inspiration from the Indian festival of color Holi. Traditionally this festival is a time for the Indian people celebrate the end of winter and the start of spring. During the Holi festival people take to the streets and celebrate by throwing and smearing handfuls of colored powder at each other. Not only is this a fun celebratory atmosphere for the participants of Holi it makes everyone a multicolor symbol of the abundance of color that comes with spring.

Jacksonville Engagement PhotographerIn order to bring the Holi Festival to our Jacksonville studio for Sara and Brandon, it took some planning and creative placement of plastic drop clothes.  Sara and Brandon were able to find and purchase the color dye powder online and showed up to the shoot with white shirts to showcase the colors. We were able to create a safe area in the studio for them to be as messy and have as much fun throwing the dye at each other by carefully taping a plastic sheet behind the paper backdrop, two on the floor, one hanging on our boom stand for lighting, and one on a side wall in the studio. They had so much fun making each other a mess of color, and we were thrilled about how great all the photos from their session came out. It’s just 66 days to their wedding and we can’t wait to work with them again.Jacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement PhotographerJacksonville Engagement Photographer
